BAYVIEW HUNTERS POINT

The PG&E power plant in Bayview Hunters Point was finally closed in May 2006, after years of protest. Since the plant's closure, the Huntersview Mothers Committee and Greenaction have demanded that PG&E safely and promptly clean up the decades of toxic contamination and keep the community informed about the toxics and cleanup activities at the site.

Bayview Hunters Point community and environmental justice groups continue to fight the City of San Francisco's attempt to build new fossil fuel power plants called "CTs" -combustion turbines, in Potrero Hill, next to Bayview Hunters Point. They are also working to replace the old and dirty Mirant power plant with clean, renewable energy.

KETTLEMAN CITY

In the early 1990's this San Joaquin Valley farmworker community was the scene of one of the most historically significant environmental justice struggles and victories, when residents won their long fight to stop Chemical Waste Management, Inc. from building a hazardous waste incinerator next to an existing toxic dump.

As of November 2007, Chem Waste, the State of California, and USEPA were seeking to expand the toxic dump, and allow additional dumping of highly toxic Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs). In November, residents and Greenaction protested against the attempted dump expansion, in conjunction with a statewide environmental justice conference held in Kettleman City.

MEGADAIRIES

The Center on Race, Poverty, and the Environment reported in January 2008 that Valley Air District Reform bill SB 719 (Full text PDF) was signed into law in the fall of 2007.

"It is a major victory for all residents of the San Joaquin Valley: it reforms the Valley Air District... by adding representatives of local cities and two medical professionals to the Board. CRPE -- along with allies from the Central Valley Air Quality Coalition and the Dolores Huerta Foundation -- provided key last minute pressure on lawmakers to pass the bill, and also helped create the climate on the ground in the Valley of overwhelming support for the measure. We will continue to push the Air District to clean up the Valley's air, now the worst in the entire United States because of the District's inaction." Source: CPRE

As of November 2008, "The San Joaquin Valley-based Association of Irritated Residents ("AIR") triumphed in CRPE-brought lawsuit to force the Valley Air District to disclose the type, quantity, and health effects of air pollution from dairies and chicken and hog facilities. In a ruling issued in November, the Court of Appeals in Fresno sided with AIR and has required the District to assess air pollution from animal facilities and disclose health effects to the public."
